He’s only a slip of a thing, but his youth and the unassuming demeanour of Liverpool lad Nathan Carter belie the powerful voice he possesses. His singing voice seems to have startled people since he was very young, though. At aged 3, the parish priest came round to his grandfather’s house for a cup of tea and his jaw promptly hit the floor as young Nathan offered up a soulful rendition of Are You Lonesome Tonight.
By the grand old age of four, the little boy had mastered the piano accordion, and went on to become head chorister of an acclaimed Liverpool boy's choir. With this group he has sung around the world, and performed for dignitaries including the US President and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. In 2006, Carter entered the Fleadh Cheoil in Letterkenny, Ireland and won him first prize for men's traditional singing.
Nowadays, Carter is a popular performer and a busy boy on the Irish circuit, playing two to three gigs a week across Britain and having just recently performed at the sell-out Irish Festival in Ibiza. We thought he was pretty good too, and in 2007 he received an Irish World Award for Best Newcomer.
